The Board of Education wishes to recognize the recipients of the CAPSS (Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents) Student Recognition Awards for 2007. The students were presented the awards at a ceremony at the Cornucopia Banqueting Hall in Torrington on November 14, 2007.

1. Appointments – (Information Only – No Action Required)

a. Mr. Thomas J. Andronowitz to the position of Assistant Principal at Swift Middle School, being hired at Step 1, at an annual contractual salary of $80,497.00 prorated, effective

at a date to be determined.

b. Mr. Remo Ceniccola to the position of Facility Manager, effective November 14, 2007, at an annual salary of $51,500.00 prorated.

c. Ms. Nancy Toomey to the position of Assistant Principal at Watertown High School, being hired at Step 1, at an annual contractual salary of $80,497.00 prorated, effective at a date to be determined.

2. Resignation – (Information Only – No Action Required)

a. Ms. Lynn Steinbrick from the position of Assistant Clinical Instructor at Watertown High School, effective November 16, 2007, for personal reasons.

3. Board of Education Meeting Dates 2008 – First Reading

The 2008 schedule of meeting dates for the Watertown Board of Education is presented this evening for the first reading. (See Attachment A.)

K. Action Items – Adoption of Items to be Approved by Consent

a. Consideration of the Approval of the Eligibility to Attend Watertown Public Schools Policy – Second Reading

At its meeting on October 29, 2007, the Policy and Labor Committee reviewed the Eligibility to Attend Watertown Public Schools Policy and presented it to the Board for the first reading at its meeting on November 13, 2007. It is presented tonight for the second reading and for full Board approval. (See Attachment B.)

It is recommended that the Board approve of the Eligibility to Attend Watertown Public Schools Policy, effective immediately.

b. Consideration of the Approval of the Personnel – General Policy – Second Reading

At its meeting on October 29, 2007, the Policy and Labor Committee reviewed the Personnel – General Policy and presented it to the Board for the first reading at its meeting on November 13, 2007. It is presented tonight for the second reading and for full Board approval. (See Attachment C.)

It is recommended that the Board approve of the Personnel – General Policy, effective immediately.

c. Consideration of the Approval of the Charges for Copies of Public Records Policy – Second Reading

At its meeting on October 29, 2007, the Policy and Labor Committee reviewed the Charges for Copies of Public Records Policy and presented it to the Board for the first reading at its meeting on November 13, 2007. It is presented tonight for the second reading and for full Board approval. (See Attachment D.)

It is recommended that the Board approve of the Charges for Copies of Public Records Policy, effective immediately.

d. Consideration of the Approval of New or Revised Textbook for the 2007-2008 School year – Second Reading

In accordance with Section 10-229 of the Connecticut General Statutes, a textbook was presented for the first reading at the Board of Education meeting on November 13, 2007 to provide a minimum notification of one week of our intent to adopt said book for instructional use. This book has been reviewed by all program leaders, administrators, and Central Office personnel. The Curriculum and Instruction Committee reviewed and endorsed this book and related material at its last meeting. This textbook is presented tonight for the second reading and for full Board approval. (See Attachment E.)

It is recommended that the Board approve of the attached textbook, effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

e. Consideration of the Approval of Family Medical Leave of Absence

Ms. Catherine Wheeler, Grade 2 Teacher at John Trumbull Primary School, requests a Family Medical Leave of Absence commencing November 19, 2007 through January 2, 2008, with use of accumulated sick time.

It is recommended that the Board approve of a Family Medical Leave of Absence commencing November 19, 2007 through January 2, 2008 with use of accumulated sick time for Ms. Catherine Wheeler, Grade 2 Teacher at John Trumbull Primary School.

f. Consideration of the Approval of the Acceptance of Gift

Mr. Charles D. Stauffacher, on behalf of the Watertown Rotary Club, would like to sponsor the Family Literacy Fund Night on November 30, 2007, at John Trumbull Primary School by providing one $3.00 coupon per family to be used towards purchasing a book at the PTO/Scholastic Book Fair. The estimated value of this gift is 268 families at $3.00 per coupon for $804.00.

The Rotary Club would also like to donate approximately 40 picture dictionaries, one for each classroom at John Trumbull Primary School at an estimated total cost of $75.00.

The Rotary Club would also like to donate Webster’s Dictionary for Students for all third grade students at Polk and Judson Schools. The value of this gift is estimated to be $525.00 for 300 dictionaries at $1.75.

It is recommended that the Board accept these generous donations and a letter of thanks to be sent to the donor.
